This is a short trail in Dulan, Taitung. The difficult (or taxing) part is to get to the trailhead. It will be easier if you drive or ride a scooter. If not, walking up to the trailhead isn't too bad. You will see the beautiful Taitung shore. About typhoons - my very straightforward thoughtsTyphoon Krathon just hit Taiwan in the past few days. When the Central Weather Bureau issues a sea warning for the typhoon, all the trails in the national parks will close. The permits will be revoked immediately. I understand many people can't wait for the typhoon to leave Taiwan and hike again. However, things are not that easy. National Parks might reopen the trails a few days after the typhoon, but there are still risks on the trails. This video shows what happened to Jinshan, New Taipei City, on the 5th of October, the day after Typhoon Krathon left. Jinshan isn't the worst-hit area; Kaohsiung is, and you can search those videos on YouTube. If this can happen in a populated area, it can be worse in the mountains. Please be patient and wait. Imagine how much water the soil contains in the mountains after typhoons, the rugged terrain, and how easily landslides can happen. I've been trying to tell people (especially international visitors) not to go to the mountains in the past few days, and it is FRUSTRATING. Some people might ask when we can hike again. I don't know, so please don't ask me. Use your best judgment and do research. I can't decide for you, and it's also unfair to ask me to. Every outdoor activity has risks, so please research, be responsible, and take responsibility. By the way, Taitung received 1,900+ mm of rainfall in the past few days, which is 190cm/6.2 ft. Continue reading the Dulanshan post... |

As 2024 comes to a close, it has been an unusual year here in Taiwan. We faced devastating earthquakes that forced us to pause our pride, Taroko, and we dealt with an overwhelming number of typhoons in October and November. Many activities were interrupted by these natural disasters. However, as they say, “Man plans and God laughs.” Yet, there are still many good things in 2024. I traveled to Europe for 3 weeks, did my first high mountain solo hike to Yushan North Peak this month, did a 3-day...
